Sha Yang, the talented designer behind the "Roly Poly Contentment" collection, has taken inspiration from the subtle wonders of nature and the joy they bring. With a desire to capture these experiences and share them with children, Yang has created a series of movable wooden toys that are both simple and fun.
The "Roly Poly Contentment" toys are designed to engage children in recognizing the physical world, stimulating their imagination, and helping them understand their environment. Each toy is carefully crafted using a combination of materials such as ash, meranti, cotton, plastic, elastic, stone, and fabric.
One of the unique features of these toys is their ability to mimic the movements of a tumbler. The most challenging aspect of the design process was finding a way to distribute the weight in the bottom of each tumbler, allowing them to turn around without toppling over. Additionally, the inner structure of each ball shape had to be meticulously designed to ensure a perfect match between the top and bottom parts. The materials used to link these parts together were carefully selected to ensure both functionality and safety.
Measuring at 80x80x110 mm, the "Roly Poly Contentment" toys are the perfect size for little hands to explore and play with. They were created during a design project that took place from January to March 2012 at the University of the Arts London, Camberwell College of Arts, 3D Resource Center.
Sha Yang's innovative design has been recognized with the prestigious A' Design Award in 2014. This award is a testament to the outstanding expertise and innovation demonstrated in the "Roly Poly Contentment" collection. The toys have been praised for their strong technical characteristics and splendid artistic skill, evoking positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
Sha Yang's "Roly Poly Contentment" toys are not just playthings; they are gateways to a world of imagination and discovery. With their unique design and thoughtful craftsmanship, these wooden toys are sure to bring joy and contentment to children and adults alike.
